Mosaics

Mosaics are decorative elements composed of small pieces of colored glass or stone, arranged to create striking visual patterns or representational works of art.  Mosaics have a long and valued place in the history of liturgical art, and were one of the most popular forms of decoration in early Christian churches, with many examples predating the sixth century.  The mosaics in the fourth century chapel of St. Aquilinus in San Lorenzo, and the famed Basilicas of Ravenna stand as testaments to the beauty and history of mosaics in the liturgical decorative arts.

Mosaics are a popular choice for liturgical decoration in part because of their versatility; they can be created in many sizes, and are appropriate decorations for floors, walls and ceilings.  The design and location of your mosaic art will depend on our understanding of your vision for your place of worship, and we are happy to work with you to create a work of representative art or a decorative motif that realizes your vision.  After determining and drafting an appropriate design, our craftsmen here in the U.S. or in our satellite offices in Poland or Italy will select and cut the best possible materials for your design.  Smaller mosaics can even be assembled at our studio, minimizing our construction time in your church.

For some of our clients, the desire to incorporate this beautiful and historically vital decorative art is best met by our artistic team’s ability to produce the visual effect of mosaic work through trompe l’oeil painting which, placed and executed appropriately, is indistinguishable from stone or glass mosaic work.
