Frescos

Fresco, from the Italian meaning “fresh,” is the ancient process of painting directly onto architectural surfaces.  Frescoes were very popular in ancient Greece and Rome, achieving new heights of technique and popularity in the first and second centuries.  The Medieval and Renaissance periods witnessed a welcome revival of the art, with frescoes adorning places of worship, government buildings, and even the more elaborate homes of European royalty and nobility.

There are two primary fresco techniques: dry and wet.  Frescoes may be applied in dry form (secco) and finished with sealants that affix the pigments, creating an ageless and timeless work of art.  In the more complicated and traditional method, frescoes are painted onto a layer of wet mortar or plaster (buon fresco), a technique requiring artists to work flawlessly and swiftly to achieve the desired artistic rendering before the plaster dries fully and seals in the applied pigments.

We at Sacred Spaces are proud to have a team of dedicated artists trained in both techniques of fresco, including the traditional and delicate buon fresco process, which requires superior precision and technique.
