Sculpted relief or molded relief carving is the carving of sculpture that extrudes from a flat background. Though extant in many areas around the world, some of the best examples of relief carving may still be found in ancient Greco-Roman architecture, where plaster work friezes commonly adorned temples and other places of worship. Sacred Spaces is pleased to work with many styles of relief carving, including “bas relief” (low-relief carvings that rely on perspective to achieve the illusion of depth), “alto-relievo” or “high relief” carving (which uses more greater carving depth to provide enhanced detail in artistic renderings), and “sunken relief” (also called “intaglio,” in which the raised effect is actually achieved by carving into the stone).
